Case Studies

Cybersecurity

A public sector agency with a limited IT budget in a country in Asia had experienced a number of cybersecurity breaches that had led to the loss of non-public data, to the detriment of the company’s reputation with its subscriber base. Asteria Technology Consulting evaluated the agency’s existing IT security framework and identified the most cost-effective solution in the short-term to be a hybrid security monitoring solution that would double as a log management/security information and event management platform, co-managed by the on-site IT team and an outsourced security operations center. The new system was configured and operational in under a month and provided newfound visibility into the agency’s vulnerability to various cyber threats, enabling the agency’s IT team to focus on immediately fixing the most critical vulnerabilities while it worked to obtain more resources and technology to shore up the agency’s overall cyberdefenses.

Telecommunications

Asteria Technology Consulting was hired by a major telecommunications operator with subsidiaries in multiple countries to provide an outside perspective on a long-delayed decision. The client was funding a costly 3G upgrade for one of its subsidiaries but was having second thoughts about investing heavily in equipment already being phased out in several of its other subsidiaries. Working with a local team in the country where the subsidiary operated, we evaluated the progress to date and drew up a cost/benefit analysis for continuing the 3G upgrade or halting the process and upgrading directly to LTE. Our research confirmed that bypassing 3G was more cost efficient for the operator and would not pose a burden to the company’s subscriber base, the majority of which was already using LTE-compatible phones. As a result, the operator changed course and ceased further investment in 3G equipment. The operator projected a significant cost savings on a 3-year project planning basis, along with the benefits of moving immediately toward a more current, interoperable technology.

Big Data

A southeast Asia-based financial services client of Asteria Technology Consulting did not have a cost-effective and efficient means of testing new risk models to determine their potential impact on the company’s customer base. Working with a major multinational systems integrator, we helped rearchitect the client’s database storage network, using a mature and highly configurable big data technology platform. The new arrangement allowed the client to test models against the company’s entire historical dataset, in a low-cost storage environment separate from the client’s live data environment, streamlining the company’s ability to quickly test new models prior to applying them to the production environment.
